Marshal's in Traning, take note of this missive

2004-02-13
Greetings.

I hate it when I have to put on the ugly face.

If you are a Marshal-in-Training for Rapier, or if you planning to be a Marshal-in-Training for
Rapier, or if you know a Marshal-in-Training for Rapier, please do take note of the following change
in policy.

As the Society becomes larger, paperwork becomes a more important duty to the Marshallate, and those
training to take their place in the Marshallate. If one cannot keep up with paperwork required to be
a Marshal, then you have no business being one.

With that caveat in mind, there has been a recurrent problem among the Marshals-in-Training for
Rapier. This problem lies when one of the two required classes to gain a Marshallate warrant is
offered, either the Rapier Marshalling class, or the Field Marshalling class (required for all MITs
regardless of discipline). Inevitably, I get a number of MITs who do not have their apprenticeship
paperwork for me to sign on hand, and ask me to remember their names so that they may obtain
signatures at a later point.

This practice will cease, effective immediately. If you come to a Rapier Marshalling Class or a
Field Marshalling Class as an MIT, have your apprenticeship paperwork there for me to sign. Neither
myself or Lord Vyvyan will agree to sign MIT paperwork for classes after the fact.

(The one exception to this rule is the Rapier Marshal class taught at Winter University in the Shire
of Berley Cort on Feb. 7, 2004. If you were present as an MIT in this class you'd better get in
touch with me right quick.)

Furthermore, if you have no paperwork to sign, and ask us to remember your name to sign your
apprenticeship paperwork later, let me be blunt; you may as well drop out of the MIT program,
because your request for warrant will be denied, even if you do complete your apprenticeship. If you
cannot be trusted to keep track of your own paperwork, then we cannot entrust you with a warrant. I
cannot be more clear.

You are more than welcome to come and audit the classes if you have no paperwork; the marshallate is
and should be a fairly transparent organization. However, if your purpose in coming to the class is
to complete MIT class requirements, you'd better bring your paperwork, or not even ask us to sign
afterwards.

Master Kevin of Thornbury, the Deputy Earl Marshal for training, can also teach the Field
Marshalling class. His policies may be different from ours regarding signing off for your class.

The classes are offered at every University of Atlantia, and Lord Vyvyan & I are working to enable
more marshals to teach those classes in a better geographic spread and on a more frequent basis so
that fulfilling your class requirements will be easier. Please don't hesitate to contact one of us
if you'd like to arrange a class for your area.
